A few weeks ago, i got a scag sthm from who knows when. The best part is that i got it for pennies and i plan to bring it in good shape and put it to use. First stop is oil and filter so i'm open to suggestions.

Great job snagging that Scag STHM. The first thing I'd recommend is to change the oil and filter, grab the Scag 48758 filter and the oil specified in your engine manual. You'll want to change the oil after the first 5 hours of use, and then every 100 hours or monthly after that. Don't forget to check the hydraulic fluid too while you're at it. That should help get your mower running like a dream

A good 10W 30 or 15W 40 (diesel rated if it's got some age on it) usually works well, but check the engine brand, Kohler, Kawasaki, etc. and go off their specs. As for the filter, grab the part number off the current one if it's readable, or check the engine model

I'd be a little concerned about the machine's age, internal wear or hidden issues could surface, so checking hydraulics, belts, and safety switches early on is just as important as oil and filter.
